This film is set during the Spanish Revolution and Spanish Civil War of the 1930’s. Maria, a young nun is recruited by Pilar, a militant feminist, into an anarchist militia and the Mujeres Libres, an anarchist womens’ organization.

Libertarius depicts the struggle of these women to be treated as equals in society and by their male comrades.The film opens with scenes of working class militants shouting "down with Capitalism!" and "long live the libertarian revolution!”
